Avalanche Detection for Winter Olympics in Livigno
Livigno is an alpine village in the Italian Alps close to the swiss border. They are a key venue for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
To optimize availability of the access roads a variety of sensors for improved forecasting and avalanche detection were installed.
A combination of GINA® (seismic) and IDA® (Infrasound) automatically detect avalanches and will activate traffic lights at the road in case of a larger event. Cameras in the release and runout areas provide valuable information for the operators.
We are proud to contribute to safe and successful winter Olympics in Livigno.
Installed systems:
- 3x GINA® Geophones in Avalanche
- 1x IDA® Infrasound Detection System
- 4 Cameras
- 1 PTZ camera
- WAC.3® Cockpit PRO
- “Piste control” software module for controlling and monitoring important traffic routes and hiking trails
All data from the detection systems—from sensor measurements to live images from webcams—is centrally consolidated in WAC.3® and clearly displayed. This gives users a comprehensive overview of the current situation at all times, enabling them to make informed decisions.
