Wyssen Risk Solutions: Wyssen avalanche service successful in Norway

For the winter of 2015/16, Wyssen Norge AS, for the first time used the Wyssen Risk Solutions concept for the execution of a local avalanche service as a subcontractor in cooperation with the Norwegian Skred AS. The projects are located in Sørfjorden, Nordland, Norway and Romarheimsdalen, Hordaland.

New platform for local avalanche warning

The operation of a good avalanche commission with the preparation of avalanche forecasts requires qualified personnel, proven work processes, relevant and accurate data and complete documentation. For this purpose, the companies Wyssen, Skred AS and AlpSolut have jointly developed a platform that ensures that the processes are followed on a daily basis and that all data and decisions are subjected to quality assurance and documented.

One of the contracts is in Norland, where the construction site of a hydropower project is to be protected. The second job is running in Hordaland where in spring 2015 a big sliding snow avalanche buried the road E39 and hit 2 cars. At the moment, a dam is being built to protect the road, and of course the construction site is also exposed to the danger of avalanches.

Both projects are about minimizing the risk to workers during the winter and avoiding unnecessary closures of construction areas. Therefore, Skred AS, together with Wyssen Norge AS as subcontractor, was contracted to provide daily avalanche assessment. This service has helped the two clients achieve their planned construction progress while ensuring the safety of the construction workers.
